Shifting on the violin can be a little challenging at first if you don't know the proper steps.
1) Make sure that you have good posture
2) Bring your left elbow closer into your body to create a pathway for your wrist to shift up the neck of the violin
3) Be sure to keep your "violin shelf" aka your left knuckle and thumb from the left hand in contact with the neck of the violin.
4) BONUS - be sure to relax the knuckle closest to the finger tip as you shift up and down the fingerboard.
